Shelby Ultimate Aero EV

January 27th, 2009 | Category: General Mayhem

Shelby Supercars first raised eyebrows several months ago with claims of building “the first 100% Green Supercar to achieve speeds never before seen”. Well, it seems like those details are starting to formalize and they are just as outlandish as previously thought. According to Shelby, the Ultimate Aero EV will be able to produce over 1,000 horsepower that will power the vehicle from 0-60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds!

Shelby has their sight on Tesla & beyond with the Aero. Whats unique about the Ultimate Aero EV will be the All-Electric Scalable Powertrain currently in development. This means you’ll be able to start with a base 200 HP engine and upgrade all the way up to a 1200 HP beast that will probably be the heart of the Aero EV. IT will also be fully charged in just 10 minutes with a 220V plug and will be capable of 150 - 200 miles on a single charge.

Board Meeting

January 26th, 2009 | Category: General Mayhem

I’ve got a video from Saturday morning at Mt. High! Took Chris & John from work out to Mt. High to teach them how to snowboard. After an hour long lesson in a big group of 30 or so, there they were! Making it down the mountain all by themselves! Both are hooked and can’t wait to ride again!
The video turned out surprisingly well for a $120 Best Buy HD “crash” cam! I used the Aiptek A-HD+ I filmed the day in 1280×720 @ 60 fps even though Quick Time tells me its technically 59.94 fps. Brought into After Effects on a Mac G8 to edit and run through the footage and spit it out at H.264 compressed to upload to Vimeo. A few things to change for the next adventure with the Aiptek on the slopes:

  • Weight. Add a few pounds of ballast to the camera and lower the center of gravity. A DIY steadycam with counterweights to beef up the little plastic camera would be great.
  • Lens. I’m still looking for a .4 or so wide angle lens. The lens is extremely narrow and you have to be pretty far from the subject to get them in full frame.
  • Audio. Wrap some cloth around the mic to kill the wind noise.

Tesla Sells Cars To Loose Money

January 22nd, 2009 | Category: General Mayhem

Every time Tesla sells a car, they loose $42,000! Edmunds reports that Tesla Motors’ Chairman Elon Musk said in an e-mail today that when the nascent electric-car maker first set its roadster’s price at $92,000, it had no idea that actual production costs would run closer to $140,000.

Now to cover for this they are tacking an extra $6000 onto an upgrade for rims & a high speed charging chord that were supposed to come as standard equipment on the preorders.

Subsequent changes in manufacturing approaches, the car’s drivetrain, heating and air conditioning system, wiring and even the supplier of body panels has helped lower costs tremendously, but each still costs Tesla “between $90,000 and $100,000″ to build, Musk said.

Add overhead, including payroll, marketing and facilities costs and the auto maker still is losing a substantial sum on each vehicle it is selling, even with its price hikes last year to $98,000 and then $109,000.

To turn things around, Tesla recently told customers who have placed $50,000 deposits on cars - some as long ago as early 2007 for vehicles with a stated price of $92,000 - that they can still get their cars at the original price, but not with the high-speed charging cable and custom alloy wheels they thought they’d be getting.

The White Stig = Ben Collins

January 21st, 2009 | Category: General Mayhem

Telegraph.co.uk reports the secret identity of the Stig as Ben Collins. A professional stuntman and Le Mans racer!

For years the identity of The Stig has been a closely guarded secret, but Collins – who has previously competed in Formula Three, Le Mans, GT and NASCAR – has apparently outed himself to staff at a Bristol gallery.

The 33-year-old let his secret slip when he asked them to help him produce a limited-edition print of The Stig in action.

Gallery owner Simon Whitehead, 27, said: “I was absolutely amazed when he said he was The Stig, it was quite a big thing in a weird way.”

Builder Jason Goody, 21, also discovered The Stig’s identity when he did some work at Collins’ home and found the famous white suit and gloves on display in a cabinet.

Other fans of Top Gear, presented by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, have been closing in on Collins in recent months. One YouTube clip shows The Stig, in full disguise, talking with a Bristol accent to a foreign TV crew – and then cuts to Collins sounding very similar.

Collins, from Bristol, has always denied being The Stig and could face the sack if he admitted it. The first Stig, stunt driver Perry McCarthy, lost the job after outing himself in his book Flat Out, Flat Broke, published in 2002.

He was known as The Black Stig and always wore a black suit and helmet before he was “killed off” during the third series in 2003. Collins has since become The White Stig, and wears an all white helmet and suit.

Collins started his motorsport career in 1994, competing in Formula First and Formula Vauxhall Junior on his way to International Formula 3.

He has appeared on BBC’s Top Gear as himself on various occasions to perform some dramatic stunts.

The Health & Safety Executive report into Hammond’s accident in September 2006 recorded that Collins had “worked closely with Top Gear as a high performance driver and consultant” and had prepared a briefing for the presenter.

Collins also recently spent three months working as a precision driver on the latest James Bond movie The Quantum of Solace.

He was the double for Daniel Craig and drove the Aston Martin DBS in some of the most challenging driving sequences.

Collins said of the experience: “It was a bit like a dream come true to work on a Bond film. On the first day filming I had to pinch myself as I was sitting there in Bond’s pin stripe suit with an Omega Watch. I felt totally at home in the Aston Martin DBS, which is just an awesome car and it was a lot of fun hammering it around the Alps.

“There were sheer drops of a thousand feet on some of the roads we using. I think a highlight was sliding the DBS up the mountain road between two giant rocks, then onto the pass with nothing but a hand rail to stop the car falling off a cliff.”

The Stig’s name derives from Clarkson’s days at Repton School where, he said, new students were always called “Stig”.

The identity of White Stig has not been officially revealed and is regarded as a carefully guarded secret by the BBC.

However, it has not stopped people from trying to identify him and names such as Julian Bailey, Damon Hill, Tim Schrick, and Russ Swift have all been suggested.

A Top Gear spokesman said: “We never comment on speculation as to who or what The Stig is.”

Happy Squirrel Appreciation Day!

January 21st, 2009 | Category: General Mayhem

BuzzFeed Reports:

Squirrels around the country are rejoicing today because it’s squirrel appreciation day! Everybody drive home just a little bit slower tonight, for the squirrels. I know I’ll be sending the bird feeder lifeguards home early, so have at it boys. My nuts are your nuts…until 11:59am when I rearm the rodent blaster.

Read the link for a few recommendations on how to properly celebrate today! If only I had known yesterday, i would have called in sick so I could spend the day at the park looking for my nuts. Or at least in the UCLA sculpture garden where the squirrels have been known to shank unsuspecting students for bags of chips…

(I also think its about time someone else takes a better/different picture of this squirrel. I wonder if he knows how famous he is?)
